Trees are a dominant feature of the natural landscape. Unfortunately, one by one Ontario’s tree species are being assaulted by a range of fungal blights, diseases, and introduced insect pests altering the species makeup of our forests. Chestnut Blight, Dutch Elm Disease and Emerald Ash Borer come to mind.
Join North Durham Nature's James Kamstra and Mike Henry, a forest ecologist with the Ancient Forest Exploration and Research Group, for this presentation. James will look at the origins, spread and implications of the various pathogens, and warn us of new ones on the horizon. Mike will be talking about the Eastern Hemlock project he is leading involving the documentation of the spread of the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, an aphid like insect that has had a large impact on the hemlock forest in the Appalachian Mountains, and was recently discovered in Ontario.
Please meet at 7 p.m. at the Scugog Memorial Library (231 Water Street, Port Perry). Everyone is welcome! A donation of $5 is appreciated from non-members. For more information, please visit our website at www.northdurhmnature.com or “Like” us on Facebook!

We can all agree - energy in Ontario is a hot topic! Ontario’s energy industry is undergoing a significant transformation as the sector moves toward long term sustainability and carbon reduction, and as consumers become increasingly engaged and active. For Durham Region businesses, this is a time of significant challenge, in some cases confusion and, we believe, opportunity that requires greater collaboration between industry, regulators, policy makers, suppliers and end-users.
Energy 2017: Have you heard the BUZZ has been designed to give businesses in our Region a greater understanding of the hot topics that impact businesses big and small and a greater understanding of the programs that are in place to support our transition to a more energy efficient economy.
Our guest speakers will be covering the topics listed below: - Ontario's Climate Action Plan (including Cap and Trade) - What is Happening Locally in Durham - Incentive Funding and Opportunities Available for Business' - Building the Business Case for Energy Efficiency More information and registration details can be found here: http://bit.ly/2mmXrf7 We look forward to seeing you there.
